The bony projections of the face like the forehead, the chin and the cheek bones, play a big role in how you look. Earlier, getting high cheek bones and a more prominent chin was difficult - You needed to undergo orthognatic surgery which necessitated cutting the malar (cheek bones) and the chin and shifting the bones forwards with screws and plates. Orthognatic surgery left a patient with unacceptable morbidity, with the patient having to be put on a liquid diet for weeks on end. The implants can be made up of bio-inert material like silicone, which is soft and non-reactive and can be easily placed over the cheek and the chin. Or, they can be made of porous poyethylene (Medpor or Biopore) material, which is an integrative material, into which the blood vessels and the fibrous tissue from the surrounding tissues can grow into the implant.
The chin implant can be inserted through an incision within the mouth. The chin implant is fixated via screws or sutures. Since the implant is inserted from inside the mouth, there are no visible skin scars. The cheek implants are also inserted from inside the mouth, using the same incision as is used in a mid-face lift. Any asymmetry in between the two malar areas can also be addressed, using the differently sized cheek implants.
